Participant stories

From indoor anxiousness to beachfront trailblazing

The challenge
Our participant, Yuri*, preferred the comfort of his home, engaging in indoor activities like watching TV and playing games, showing no interest in outdoor activities. This limited lifestyle was the initial challenge, as he was reluctant to explore community engagement and recreational pursuits outside his home.
Our solution
Our approach began with gentle suggestions, aiming to introduce Yuri to the benefits of outdoor activities. After initial resistance, we proposed a simple walk in their quiet neighbourhood, which he accepted and enjoyed. Building on this positive experience, we gradually introduced outings to community locations, starting with a visit to Semaphore beach.
The result
These outings transformed Yuri’s life, offering him newfound joy in outdoor activities. He observed significant physical and psychological improvements, expressing enthusiasm for his excursions. This shift not only enhanced his quality of life but also expanded his world beyond the confines of his home.

Mastering mindfulness in mundane moments

The challenge
Our resident, Zora*, faced difficulties with organisation and following instructions, which led to agitation and restlessness. A specific challenge was her impatience in the cafe queues during community activities, threatening to limit her social engagements and happiness.
Our solution
To address this, we focused on building a strong rapport with Zora, using role-playing exercises to illustrate the importance of patience and waiting in line. These interactive sessions were designed to enhance her understanding and empathy towards others in social settings.
The result
The strategy led to a remarkable improvement in Zora’s behaviour. She learned the value of patience, willingly waiting her turn without reminders. This progress was a breakthrough for Zora and her mindfulness; issues that were deeply appreciated by her family, showcasing our service’s impact in developing essential social skills.
